Austrian air traffic controllers were once again faced with what were effectively blank screens Wednesday, as the transponder system failed for half an hour.

On this occasion, the failure affected only planes that were at high-altitude, meaning they were mostly in established air corridors that pass over Austrian territory.

The failure lasted for half an hour, as was confirmed by Austro Control spokesman Markus Pohanka according to a report in the Kurier newspaper.

Earlier this week, similar problems were experienced that disrupted Austrian air traffic control systems, and were thought on that occasion to be linked to military exercises taking place in Hungary.
