Two teenagers from Burgenland have been injured - one of them seriously - after shooting at each other with an air rifle.

Two 17-year-olds and an 18-year-old were shooting at plastic bottles in a cellar in Rechnitz on Tuesday night. At some point during the evening the 18-year-old turned the rifle on one of his friends, apparently out of boredom, according to Burgenland state police.

He pulled the trigger several times and hit the 17-year-old from about five feet away - in the back, chest, and thighs. Despite the teenager having visible, albeit superficial injuries, they all went to sleep.

The next morning the injured boy got revenge on his attacker and shot him, from close range, in the left buttock. The boys waited until the afternoon to go to hospital. Doctors found that the pellet had penetrated five inches into the older teenager’s buttock, and due to complications they have not yet been able to remove it.

Police have seized the air rifle and reported the two shooters on suspicion of assault.
