Police say the crash happened at 12:45am on Friday in Zeillern, and that the victim was 16 years old. Five vehicles were involved in the pile-up, including a small truck and a lorry.

According to the police report a 26-year-old Moldovan man was driving a car with a trailer attached, on which he was transporting the head of a combine harvester. He crashed with a 37-year-old German man who was driving a small truck.

The trailer detached from the car and skidded into the second lane whilst the Moldovan’s car flipped onto its side in the hard shoulder.

A 40-year-old Romanian man who was driving a lorry rammed into the combine harvester head but was uninjured. However an Austrian woman behind him was less lucky, she crashed into the trailer and her car flipped over onto its roof. The car behind her was unable to swerve in time and crashed into her vehicle. The 19-year-old driver survived but her passenger - a 16-year-old boy - was fatally injured.

Amstetten District Fire Service described the motorway as looking “like a battlefield”. Several rescue teams and ambulances were deployed to bring the wounded to hospitals. The Westautobahn was closed for several hours.
