A young Austrian mother who had gone missing while on holiday in Italy has been found dead along with her five-month-old baby, having committed suicide after killing the child.

The 22-year-old mother had reportedly been suffering from depression following the birth of the child and had been taken on holiday by her mother to Lake Bolsena near Montefiascone to try and help her recover.

The young mum had reportedly left the bungalow in the campsite where she had been with her mother, having told her she was going to lay the baby down.

When she did not return her mother raised the alarm and a search team, including a helicopter and divers, was launched to try and find her.

Tragically, however, they found the woman’s body hanging from a tree 200 metres from the lake with her baby lying underneath covered with a jacket, having been strangled.

The local city prosecutor Chiara Capezzuto confirmed that the mother had committed suicide and no other people were involved in the case.

Investigators say they believe the woman strangled the baby before killing herself, although the body of the child was still being examined for evidence of bodily harm on Sunday.

Mayor of Montefiascone Luciano Cimarello said that the local community have been shaken by the incident.

“We had hoped to find the woman alive. We are all shocked,” he said, quoted in Die Presse.
