A 16-year-old was arrested in Vienna at the weekend after he reportedly tried to drag two women he had just met into a cellar so he could rape them.

The incident took place on at 4am on Saturday morning in Vienna’s Leopolstadt district, after the two women - an 18-year-old and a 20-year-old - met the teenager on the U-bahn at 4am and decided to go for a drink with him.

“The woman were unfamiliar with the area and thought at first the man was leading them to a bar,” said a police spokesman.

As they were about to enter a house on Körnergasse, however, the 16-year-old suddenly grabbed both of the women and tried to drag them into the cellar of the building.

The 20-year-old was able to get free and alert the police, while the suspect pulled the younger woman into the cellar and tried to assault her, although she was able to fight him off until police arrived.

The teenager, whom police say is an asylum seeker from Libya, was arrested while still sitting on the floor of the cellar.
