A pensioner has been found frozen to death in his garden after he went out to feed the birds.

The senior citizen, aged 69, who went out to feed the birds in the town of Ebenthal, near Klagenfurt, fell over on some packed snow and was unable to stand up again.

As the temperatures plunged to -7C, hypothermia began to set in. When the man was eventually found by a passer-by he had already frozen to death.

The man was wearing jeans, a shirt and a pair of slippers when he went into his garden at around 4pm on Tuesday, never to return.

From what he was wearing, it can be assumed he only intended to stay in the garden for a short time. But he apparently slipped and fell and was unable to get back up by himself.

Police in the region have warned old people to take extra care during the cold snap, which is expected to last through the weekend.
