Five courtyard cafes to soak up the sun
As Austria braces itself for another heatwave, the Local Austria profiles some of Vienna's nicest courtyard cafes in which to sit and soak up the sun this weekend.
From social projects to friendly in-house cats, the following five venues are perfect places to chill out with an Aperol spritz and enjoy the last of the summer sun.
Hotel am Brillantengrund
A small, independent hotel in Vienna's 7th district, the cafe in Hotel am Brillantengrund is getting a name for itself as the best place to find Filipino food in Vienna. Filipino burgers, steaks and tofu dishes are on the menu but the bright courtyard decorated in plants and colourful flowers is also a great place just for a quiet drink with friends. The family-owned business also sometimes runs music, art, and cultural events in the bar at the end of the garden.

magdas Salon
One of the nicer spots to get a coffee near the Prater, soaking up the sun at the cafe in magdas Hotel is also a chance to support a local social project. The hotel is run by the charity Caritas and most of its staff are refugees so any money spent on coffee or snacks goes directly back to a good cause. Guests are welcome to take books from one of the bookshelves in the salon and then find a nice spot outside on a deckchair to enjoy a sunny afternoon. Who ever knew charity could feel so good?

Das Augustin
It is a little out the way but it is worth making the trip on a Saturday morning to try one of Das Augustin's breakfasts from around the world. Passing through the velvet draped front door takes you to the cosy restaurant interior but on a sunny day it's the courtyard garden outside that is particularly inviting. Two friendly cats can often be found mooching about the yard where tables are clustered together, giving the spot an intimate atmosphere.

Tian Bistro
A feast for the eyes as much as the stomach, it is not a surprise this vegetarian restaurant is frequently recommended as one of Vienna's best cafes. Found at the back of the Kunsthaus Wien, a museum designed by the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the venue epitomises much of Hundertwasser's style including undulating floors, bright colours, and plenty of house plants. Outside, mosaics and plants decorate the yard which offers a great view of the colourful museum.

Mill
This relaxing cafe and restaurant with Asian-inspired decorations has a beautiful courtyard garden complete with a variety of plants. The outside area of Mill is partly covered so guests can choose to sit either in the sun or shade but as it's a favourite amongst locals, The Local recommends booking for large groups.
Open until 5pm-11pm Monday to Friday
and until 11am-4pm on Sundays
Closed on Saturdays
