Austrian stabbed in Moscow over taxi fare
An Austrian man who was stabbed and died on Sunday evening in Moscow after an argument over a taxi fare was from Salzburg's Pinzgau region, according to an ORF report.
He was 33-years-old and was on business in the Russian capital. He worked for the drinks carton manufacturer SIG/Combibloc in Saalfelden.
The Austrian was reportedly killed after arguing with a Moscow taxi driver about a €14 fare. The ORF reports that he took the taxi from a disco to the apartment where he was staying.
The 33-year-old taxi driver was arrested shortly after the stabbing and told police that he had been forced to defend himself with a knife after the Austrian started attacking him. He said that he always kept a knife in his glove compartment for his own safety.
The taxi driver tried to drive off with the bleeding Austrian but was stopped by police. The wounded man died of his injuries before he could be taken to hospital. According to local Russian media the taxi driver has previous criminal convictions and has now been charged with murder.
Employees at SIG/Combibloc in Saalfelden are mourning their colleague, who they said was a dedicated and experienced service technician, who spoke fluent Russian.
SIG/Combibloc is one of the world's largest manufacturer of drinks cartons, and employs around 300 people at its plant in Saalfelden.
