A homeless Slovakian man froze to death on a bench outside Vienna’s Hütteldorf station on Tuesday morning - despite hundreds of commuters passing him on their way to work.

One commuter told the Heute newspaper that he had seen the 51-year-old man at 8am, “sitting quietly and drinking vodka”.

At about 1pm several people noticed that the man was motionless and called police. When police examined him they said that he had already been dead for hours. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

“It’s very sad that someone should die alone on the street. If you see someone on the street who looks like they need help please call our winter emergency line - 01 480 45 53,” Klaus Schwertner, the head of the Vienna branch of Caritas said.
