The demonstration was organized by students via facebook, under the motto: "No to Racism and the Freedom Party in our schools."

"The FPÖ has nominated Maximilian Krauss, a violent right winger and notorious racist, as Deputy City School Board President. We, an inner circle of friends, of committed students, firmly reject this appointment."

The demonstration was supported by the Alternative and Green unionists and independent trade unionists, the Alliance for Human Rights & Civil Courage, Action Critical Students (AKS), Linkswende, Muslim Youth of Austria (MJÖ), Offensive Against the Right (OGR ) and the Socialist Left Party.

Demonstrators gathered at the main University building in Vienna and the protest parade began at 17.00, accompanied by a large contingent of police.

There were no reports of violence, with police spokesman Paul Eidenberger reporting that "the protest went very peacefully."

Vienna's Mayor Michael Häupl (SPÖ) however, has refused to give Krauss the position of Deputy City School Board President.
