A group of politicians from Vienna’s 21st district, Floridsdorf, have launched a petition against street prostitution in their area.

They claim that it is mainly “foreign prostitutes and pimps” who are working in “horrible” conditions.

Local politicians Hans Jörg Schimanek and Ossi Turtenwald, from the Wir für Floridsdorf (WiFF) party said that street walkers have extended their area of business from the Einzingergasse to Autokaderstraße. "Street prostitution in Strebersdorf has got out of hand," they said in a statement.

Pedestrians and business owners from the area have complained that they have been accosted by prostitutes and pimps, and have also found used condoms on the pavements.

Georg Papai, the district chairman for the SPÖ, has said that street prostitution should be limited to the hours between 5pm and 6am.

However, the WiFF petition is calling for a total ban on street prostitution in the area, and says that the presence of street walkers has led to “a significant increase in violence and drug-related crime".

The majority of sex workers in Vienna are migrants, mainly from the former Eastern Bloc countries.
